Implement
During the Implementation phase you will create an overview of the tasks and actions required to effectively implement and execute the course, as well as how these tasks and actions will be divided.
You usually carry out this phase simultaneously with the development phase or start it during the development phase. Here, Teacher Supporter also has an important role to help you divide the different roles.
In this step, you will create an overview of the tasks and actions required to effectively implement and execute the course, as well as how these tasks and actions will be divided.
TO DO
- Download the Implementation Checklist.
- You probably already downloaded the Development + Implementation Plan template during the Development Fase. You also need it now.
- Follow the steps on the checklist and use the worksheets that are relevant for you. Feel free to use your own tools or templates.
About the Development + Implementation Plan:
- Worksheet 1: CBL Development planner. To plan the content you need to develop, filled in during the development phase.
- Worksheet 2: CBL Implementation Planner. To plan the activities to run the course.
- Worksheet 3 CBL Group Size Planner. To calculate the different group sizes.
- Worksheet 4: CBL Schedule for Students. To create a final course schedule to share with students.
- Worksheet 5: CBL Meeting Planner. To create an overview of all the meetings that need to be scheduled.
Central to CBL courses is fostering students' self-directed learning, requiring lecturers to shift from traditional teaching to a coaching role. In this capacity, they guide students to resources and experts, enabling independent discovery rather than directly imparting knowledge. They are no longer the sole repositories of knowledge but become facilitators of learning.
To learn how to embrace this coaching role as an instructor, TU/e has implemented the Coaching for Learning method. Below, you can see how to make this approach your own.
TO DO
- The easiest way to learn the Coaching for learning method is to follow this short workshop Coaching Students in CBL. During the workshop you practice with techniques and learn which habits to implement.
- Download the Coaching for learning Checklist. You can start practicing it, even without or before the workshop.
- For more background in Coaching for learning, you can read this Coaching for learning book. The book is also available in Dutch via the TU/e library. Or for sale: part 1 and part 2. A summary of the book will soon be available as a pdf or as pages with assignments in Canvas. If you want to use the Canvas pages, please contact TEACH@tue.nl.
Students, PhDs, and junior teachers are crucial as Tutors in CBL courses. They too need to learn how to guide students through the CBL process. Below is a recommended learning pathway for tutors.
TO DO
- With the Implementation Checklist and the CBL Groupsize planner in the Implementation Plan you defined their roles and responsibilities of the tutors and how many tutors you need to recruit.
- Next, you train your tutors. This can be done via TEACH. There are two separate modules for tutors; a Tutor Training and an Advanced Tutor Training for experienced tutors. Go to the Tutor Training Information Page to read more. Feel free to contact TEACH with any questions.
- In addition, tutors need separate instructions per course. Which clearly states what exactly is expected of them. For inspiration, check out these best practices:
Tutor Training for Engineering Design (PPT),
Tutor manual for 4WM00 (DOC),
Tutor Course E3 Challenge 2 (PDF) - During your course regulary meet with your tutors and afterwards organise an evaluation with them.
