Societal boundaries – Social shortcoming

In addition to the nine planetary boundaries, Raworth (2017) identifies 12 societal boundaries rooted in fundamental needs—such as the rights to water, food, and shelter—and social justice, including equity, education, and political voice. These 12 boundaries form the so-called “social foundation.” Deficiencies in this foundation lead to social injustice and exploitation. While data on social shortcomings varies by country, globally, all 12 boundaries have been surpassed, indicating that we are not operating within the “just space for humanity.”

University of Leeds developed an interactve page exploring the progress of nearly 150 countries over time using interactive charts and doughnut plots from the recent 2022 study by Andrew L. Fanning et.al The Social Shortfall and Ecological Overshoot of Nations. Additionally, there is an Interactive National Treands Repository: A Good Life For All Within Planetary Boundaries
