Planetary boundaries – Ecological overshoot

Rockström et al. (2009) proposed a new approach to defining the preconditions for human development by examining Earth's capacity to regenerate itself. They identified nine biophysical thresholds, crossing which could have catastrophic consequences for humanity. These thresholds, known as the nine planetary boundaries, constitute the “ecological ceiling.” Surpassing a planetary boundary results in what is termed “ecological overshoot,” indicating that the Earth can no longer regenerate itself naturally beyond that point. As of 2024, research shows that six of these nine boundaries have already been crossed, meaning we are no longer operating within the “safe space for humanity.”
