System Integration Project -Challange Based Learning (5LEF0)

Summary of the project

The course System Integration Project (5LEF0) has been a 10-credit course offered by the Electrical Engineering department to students of the Sustainable Energy (SET) Technology master. It has been conducted as a project where groups have been needing to solve a “real world” challenge for more renewable energy supply or more efficient energy use by a municipality, local community, or industry. With this project, the department has been aiming to incorporate more challenge-based learning into the curriculum. The implementation of challenge-based learning has been getting assistance from, for example, the expert team of Innovation Space and ESoE's research on CBL.

Aim of the project

The main objective of the project has been to update this structure to include the essential elements of a CBL project, including the stages of Engaging, Investigating, and Acting. This also means that the problem definition has been becoming a larger responsibility of student teams (as opposed to main goals being pre-defined), and that the framework for formulating the trajectory has been taught to the students at the beginning of their project. This transformation of the lecture modules has been the main objective proposed by the project.
