Background and justification of the project
The MOOC Sports and Building Aerodynamics was the 1st MOOC launched by TU/e in 2013.
From this experience, the following lessons were learnt:
- Sufficient time should be allocated to design and create the learning materials and videos
- Whenever is possible reuse the learning materials from existing courses, e.g. web lectures, assignments, exercises, etc.
- A dedicated person should be in charge of taking care of the forum
MOOCs are an excellent tool to promote research work, TU/e and to make a good impression in our field of expertise.
Objectives and expected outcomes
The MOOC will be lengthened to reach the following goals:
- Students can follow the upgraded week 6 and the completely new weeks 7 and 8 online in the MOOC.
- Students can independently study and follow the topics whenever they want wherever they are.
- The upgraded topics related to week 6 and the new topics related to weeks 7 and 8 will be designed and implemented in Coursera.
The project has the following deliverables:
- The learning materials (assignments, exercises, quizzes and/or videos) for week 6, 7 and 8.
- The courses structure in Coursera.
Project design and management
The scope of the project is:
- Extend the database of learning materials and videos of the MOOC to cover the topics of week 6, 7 and 8.
Risks:
- The lack of time from any of the courses’ stakeholders may have a negative impact in the update of the MOOC. However every attempt will be made to mitigate this risk.
- Studio availability.
The project is developed following the 6 steps to blended learning
Step 1. Intake and analysis
December 2018
Step 2. Experiment
Step 3. Design
January – February 2019
In this design phase the learning materials, as assignments, quizzes, exercises, peer‐reviews and/or videos will be design based on the learning objectives.
Step 4. Production
February – July 2019
In this phase, the learning materials will be created. The structure and materials of the course should also be implemented in Coursera.
Step 5. Implementation
November 2019 – January 2020
Step 6. Evaluation
February 2020
In this phase two evaluations will be done:
- Evaluation of the project: To check if the process and the cooperation within the team and the fulfilment of the roles worked out well.
- Course evaluation: To see if the redesign course meets the original objectives and also to check if the blend is effective and how students value the redesign.
Dissemination and sustainability of the project
Dissemination can be done in various forms: During the faculty’s educational day, publication on the education pages on the TU/e website and faculty meetings.
