ICT Lab Teaching Activities
Summary of the Project
The project includes reshaping an existing course and creating a new course, motivated by the recent retirement of senior professors and a shared drive to modernize and broaden the current teaching offerings. The plan aims to attract a larger student audience and draw excelling students to the ICT Lab’s research activities. The proposed actions are:
- Reshaping the current course “Applications of Information Theory,” modernizing it to reflect current trends in coding and information theory. This course focuses more on modern channel coding and shaping techniques with applications to contemporary channels like optical fibre and multi-user wireless channels. This includes producing a new set of harmonized video lectures, writing a comprehensive course reader, and creating an open-source repository on GitHub with implementations of significant coded-modulation schemes.
- Creating a new MSc online course “Modern Fiber Optical Communications,” which covers all main aspects of modern optical fibre communications, both theoretical and experimental. The course is offered fully online on platforms like Coursera and features modular video lectures, an open-source repository with simulation code, a virtual tour of high-capacity optical lab facilities, and supporting teaching materials.
Aim of the Project
The aim of this project is to attract a larger student audience, draw excelling students to the ICT Lab’s research activities, and increase the visibility of the lab and faculty on a global scale. By reshaping the current “Applications of Information Theory” course and creating a new MSc online course “Modern Fiber Optical Communications,” the ICT Lab plans to modernize its teaching activities, reflecting the latest trends and techniques in the field. This initiative seeks to enhance the educational experience, providing students with updated, high-quality learning materials and practical, hands-on knowledge. The fully online format of the new course aims to reach a global audience, leveraging platforms like Coursera to attract thousands of views and broaden the impact of the ICT Lab’s educational offerings. Through these actions, the project aligns with the objectives of modernizing the curriculum, increasing student engagement and participation in research, and enhancing the international reputation of the ICT Lab and faculty.
