Summary of the project

The "Exploratory Sketching" project, led by Martijn van de Wiel, has been focusing on developing sketching skills within the Industrial Design program by teaching various sub-competencies such as fluency, accuracy, line quality, perspective, and rendering techniques. Students fill out a competency chart at the beginning and end of the elective to set personal goals and track their progress. An online competence development tool has been created to help instructors and students structure the learning path, set personal goals, and enable self-assessment. Additionally, an interactive audio feedback tool has been designed and implemented, integrated into the Sketchdrive platform. This tool allows instructors to record verbal feedback and attach it directly to students’ work, providing timely and valuable feedback. The project also includes offering the elective in a blended learning format, giving students the flexibility to work at their own pace and from any location.

Aim of the project

The project aims to enhance the student learning experience through effective and efficient feedback and competence development methods. By developing an online competence development tool, students have been able to focus better on their learning goals, which is expected to increase their motivation and engagement. The audio feedback tool is designed to support instructors in providing quality feedback within limited time, which is crucial for developing students’ critical and self-improvement skills. Offering the course in a blended learning format provides the opportunity to scale up enrollment, make practical education available online, and reduce the need for physical facilities. The ultimate goal is to develop a reflection-feedback approach that meets the needs of both instructors and students, and to share these new methods as best practices within other courses and departments at TU/e.
