ChemTube: a library for video tutorials on laboratory infrastructure
Summary of the Project
The project has been developing ChemTube, a comprehensive library of video tutorials for the Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (CE&C) department at TU/e. Recognizing the challenges students face due to the vast array of experimental techniques and equipment, this initiative aims to make laboratory infrastructure more accessible and understandable for BSc and MSc students. The project involves creating short video tutorials that cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the scientific instruments available in the department. These videos will help students understand the capabilities and applications of various instruments, facilitating self-directed learning and enhancing their challenge-based learning experience.
Aim of the Project
The primary aim of this project has been to bridge the gap between students' knowledge and the available laboratory infrastructure by providing a clear, comprehensive, and easily accessible resource. By developing ChemTube, the project seeks to enable students to efficiently utilize the department’s resources for their projects, improving the quality and efficiency of their learning experience. The expected outcomes include a comprehensive library of video tutorials that will support self-directed learning, provide a clear overview of available equipment, and explain the practical applications and theoretical underpinnings of these instruments. This initiative aligns with the goal of integrating challenge-based learning into the curriculum and enhancing the synergy between education and research. The project's success will be measured by the increased accessibility and effective use of laboratory resources by students.
Results and learnings
In the first phase of this project, following activities were completed:
• Suitable recording infrastructure was identified and purchased (camera, light equipment, stands, microphones)
• Licenses for suitable video and graphic editing software (Canva, Adobe Premier Pro) were purchased
• Uniform, functional, and appealing video and graphic templates were designed
• Functional protocols for writing and reviewing scripts were developed
• Functional protocols for recording, editing, and reviewing videos were developed
• The first set of high-quality videos was finalized and it can be found via this link to the YouTube channel
